Intro to My 3 Words for 2010

It's 2010. Most people are thinking about how 2009 went and how they want 2010 to play out.

For better or worse, I've never been the type to write down my goals at the beginning of each new year. I'm not sure why, but this practice hasn't stuck for me. I've always got things I want to do and things I want to accomplish, but they never make their way to a formal list that I review and check off at the end of each year. Call me crazy.

This year might be different for me.

I like how Chris Brogan has 3 Words for 2010. Why? In the words of Mr. Brogan "these words are like a lighthouse that helps a ship in a storm." This method forces you to think on a higher (or maybe different) level. The words are meant to guide everything you do. This isn't to say that alternative method is inferior. What matters is finding a system or method that works for you. This one seems to be sinking in for me.

Getting Started

@jnswanson has some great questions to consider while thinking about your 2010 plans. These questions helped me formalize my three words.

  1. What do I want to finish?
  2. What do I want to change?
  3. What do I want to maintain? (Sometimes you are actually doing fine about some things).
  4. What do I want to refine?
  5. What do I want to stop doing?
  6. What do I need to do, though wanting has nothing to do with it?
  7. What can I finally throw away?
  8. What do I want to go back to?

Going Deeper

I recently watched The Bucket List with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. It reminded me to think about goals that have meaning and purpose beyond my professional ambitions. Goals that extend into my personal life.

Food for Thought

While you're thinking about where you're headed in 2010 take some time to check out these posts from a few friends of mine. They might inspire you or help you pinpoint something you've been thinking about for a while now.

My three words

  1. Concerts - Think about what it takes to build the Boston Symphony Orchestra or what it took for the Dolphins to win the Superbowl and go undefeated in 1979 (that's a concert of sorts, right?).
  2. Offenses - Think about the Championship Bulls from Michael Jordan's day or maybe think about Google or Mac.
  3. Monks - Think about their commitment to something greater, their humility and their purity.

I'll have more on these soon. In the mean time, what are your 2010 plans? Please do share.

Frank- thanks so much for the mention. Concerts is such a great choice. After all, no one can succeed alone, and no organization can succeed when staff are not empowered to be great themselves. And no idea can succeed without stakeholder enthusiasm. It's such a choice (pun intended) word, and I love it. (I may have to start incorporating it into my thinking, hat tip to you...)

Now you've pushed me to think about what I'd like to accomplish, in just three words. Thanks for the inspiration!

Whew! I have so many "goals" except I prefer to call them action steps because I purpose to make them actionable steps to accomplish over a set period of time. For me - the most pressing is putting together a stellar Ten Habits of Successful Blogging series for January. Very excited about that.
The most IMPORTANT (a la Franklin's Urgent vs Important) is having Baby Blessing #4 in April.

I love your focus #3 - I find that when I am thinking outside of myself more, greater things are accomplished.

Frank these are totally amazing questions.
For me, especially "what do you want to finish?" (which I found I cd answer instantly) and "what do you want to return to?" (which is much harder for me--what about you?)

I also like the way you set out the "3-words" concept at the outset, then took the extra step to explain why and how it can help to focus reflection, maybe from a new angle.

Simple concepts, insightful ideas, articulate post.
Much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your goals/3 words, Frank - and for including the context about how others can do the same.

I agree with your tweet that we have a lot in common with our focus points for 2010 and am really looking forward to how my thoughts on collaboration and community can mesh and build with yours!

Happy 2010 :)

@askdebra - Exactly why I chose the word "concerts" for one of my 3. I want to focus on being great and helping others be great so, as a team, we can make incredible things happen.

@AngEngland - Thanks for stopping by my new found friend. Congrats on #4 :) - that's very exciting. My wife and I are going for #1. You're on point with my 3rd word - being about others matters most and always comes back around. p.s. - looking forward to the 10 habits series.

@SidneyeveMatrix - Thanks for the sharing! It takes time to think through this stuff. I'm not 100% sure what I want to return to yet - or maybe better stated - I'm not done thinking through what I want to return to. Actively building relationships online with people in my niche is something I've been focused on over the past 6 months. That's something I know I'll for sure be returning to :)

Love your three words, Frank! Very non-traditional, which I think is just the kind of thinking needed this year! The best one is "offense."

As Robert Frost said, "The quickest way out is through."

Thanks too for including me in your post.

@joewaters & @chrisgarrett... appreciate you stopping by fellas! The words are "different" ... that's for sure. ) I'm trying to stretch it while focusing on the guiding light principal with these. I think they'll help me as long as I keep reminding my self of their meaning. That's the trick with any type of goal setting though, right?

Joe, I'm waiting on yours man!

Here's to a great new year!
